First use of low-carbon concrete for infrastructure in Burkina Faso: the Ouagadougou-Donsin international airport

The future Ouagadougou-Donsin international airport, a new hub of economic development in the heart of the country located 30 km from the capital, will mark the first use of EXEGY ® low-carbon concrete for infrastructure in Burkina Faso.

As is often the case when implementing an EXEGY® solution, collaboration between the different project stakeholders was vital. In this particular case, a research partnership was set up between the teams working for Sogea-Satom, a VINCI Construction subsidiary, and the 2iE University of Ouagadougou to meet the technical and environmental requirements of the project.

The challenge was to develop a concrete with the required compressive strength, adapted to temperature and humidity conditions in Burkina Faso. Several tests were necessary to arrive at a  formulation incorporating blast furnace slag in the lab, which was then validated by a test protocol carried out on site.  On completion of the process, the first pouring of low-carbon concrete took place in August 2022 on the worksite.

The project started in February 2021 and will end in April 2024.
